From Crocodiles to Culture, The Story of Abayan Lives On! Long ago, the mighty Agusan River was feared for being infested by crocodiles, especially dangerous at night. Seeking protection, the people of Butuan turned to Sra. Sta. Ana, patroness of the waters. With drums echoing and voices rising in faith shouting “Viva, Sra. Sta. Ana!”, they held a fluvial procession to drive the danger away. That powerful tradition became what we now call “ABAYAN”.
Fast forward to today, Abayan is more than a tribute. It’s a celebration of our roots, our resilience, and the river that has sustained generations of Butuanons. It’s our way of holding on to who we are, even as the world changes. Join us this July 27, 6AM at the PPA Grounds for a vibrant celebration featuring: • Layag sa Agusan – a dazzling River Float Competition • Saugan: Barangay Showdown – with colorful props, costumes, and high-energy performances from riverside barangays!
